Data mapping Svalbard's waters
A large area of Norwegian and International waters, twice the size of France, surrounding Svalbard and reaching up to the North pole is now off-limits for cod fishing. Pressure from Greenpeace helped lead to a new agreement between the Norwegian Fishing Vessel Owners Association, Fiskebåt, Russian fishing giant, Karat and Europe’s largest processor of frozen fish, Espersen, and global brands who use fish caught and processed by them - including McDonald's and Tesco.
We worked with Greenpeace to map the rich eco-system around Svalbard and to map the movements of trawlers, proving fishing was taking place in areas of the Barents Sea previously inaccessible due to sea ice surrounding Svalbard for most of the year. Arctic sea ice is in retreat and with that certain to continue the threat to the rich ecosystem of the Barents Sea from industrial fishing was growing.
