The Climate Emergency Unpacked report

Plastic not so fantastic

Created for the Greenpeace International Plastics Campaign, The Climate Emergency Unpacked report unpacks the issues the world faces as the oil and plastics industries tool-up for the coming decades.

Packed with illustrations, infographics and geospatial maps this report was designed to act as guide to Greenpeace’s campaign position on plastic. It walks the reader through how plastic is made, the connections between the oil and Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) brands, the impacts upon people and environment and then - across a series of maps - locates how and where the industry is expanding. These maps were created from scratch by us using a plethora of open-source mapping data in Avenza’s Mapublisher.

The report challenges the idea at the heart of the ‘circular economy’, arguing that closed-loop recycling is a myth that is promoted by FMCG industry to suggest that the responsibility for dealing with plastic waste resides with the consumer and government policy, not the corporations whose business models depend on the stuff.
